The largest organized international awards for the stainless steel industry are hosted by the South Africa Stainless Steel Development Association (SASSDA) in Johannesburg.
Early in 2002 Bell Stainless was invited to enter the competition as the work we were doing in the domestic market was not being seen in other regions, or even by other local fabricators. We sent samples of our work along with photos of jobs we'd done for judging, and were thrilled to be informed that we’d been nominated for awards in two separate categories. It was with great hopes but realistic expectations that Fred and Ev Bell planned a trip to the African continent to include the SASSDA award ceremony in South Africa.
Fred (below on the right) is accepting the trophy for winning the Kitchen Design category.
Company history
F.A. & E.J. Bell and Sons Pty Ltd (now trading as Bell Stainless Pty Ltd) began in 1956 as a plumbing business, operating out of the Sydney suburb of West Ryde. The business grew rapidly and did well, enjoying a reputation for high quality. The Bell family moved to Qld in 1973 and settled in Buderim. Son Phillip became involved, eventually taking on a major role in day to day management.
In 1985 the company bought a small sheetmetal shop at Maroochydore, and this became the company’s base.
Both businesses flourished throughout the 80's and 90's, and early in 1994 the company moved to larger premises with excellent road frontage on Maroochydore Rd, Kunda Park. In 2000 it was decided the plumbing side of the business would be closed down and the sheetmetal shop would continue in its own right.
We were encouraged to enter the 2002 SASSDA awards competition by some of our suppliers, and were fortunate enough to do well. See heading International awards below for more information.
The company has continued to expand and currently employs a number of the industry's most talented tradesmen, and is actively training the next generation of apprentices and school-based trainees.
We’ve got some exciting plans for the future which we’ll add to this and other pages on the site as they develop.
By the end of the evening Bell Stainless had won two awards, out of a field of 7,000 entrants from 121 countries!
The only Australian company to achieve one of these awards, and the only company worldwide to win multiple SASSDA awards.
Since then Bell Stainless has continued to develop new and innovative techniques for the design and manufacture of stainless steel products, primarily in the domestic market.
