What is stainless steel?

Can stainless steel rust?

  1. The short answer is no in normal circumstances, but corrosion can be caused by environmental variables (i.e. salt or chlorine), close proximity to other metal types (galvanic corrosion), or low-level electrical current (i.e. as sometimes observed in swimming pools or similar installations)

What's the brown stain appearing on my stainless steel?

  1. The name “stainless steel” is perhaps an unfortunate industry term, referring to the metal’s ability to resist the corrosive properties associated with iron in mild steel, commonly known as rust

  2. The brown stains that occur on the surface of stainless steel in the presence of salt, chlorine or other contaminants is called tea staining. It will only effect the surface of the host material unless it's allowed to sit undisturbed for a long period of time. Eventually the stainless will develop surface pitting in the effected area, and then a gradual deterioration until the material has been eaten away. This takes quite a long time and is the process of oxidisation for stainless steel

How can I remove tea stains, and can I prevent them from re-occuring?

  1. Like most things, tea staining is quite easy to remove with the right tools. Bell Stainless have a couple of products that do an excellent job, and are available to learn about and purchase online at our Cleaning products page

  2. Prevention of further tea staining can be greatly improved by the periodic wiping and / or rinsing of stainless assetts with a clean damp cloth. This means the tea stain process has to begin again before there's any visible marks. Even in harsh coastal areas this will mean your stainless remains tea stain-free and looking great
